The lead SuperTuxKart developer has big plans for the future of the best free software kart racing game. Vulkan support is on the to-do list but that won't arrive until SuperTuxKart 2.0. There will be several 1.x released before 2.0 arrives. The next minor release, SuperTuxKart 1.3, will have a new re-vamped GNU kart and a polished and improved "Enterprise" track.

SuperTuxKart git as of September 23rd, 2020.

SuperTuxKart 1.2, released in the end of October, was a huge success, specially so on Android. There are a lot more people with Android devices than there are GNU/Linux desktop and laptop users, so that is understandable.

The SuperTuxKart developers and STK artwork team have been working hard since that release. The current git version has a new and improved GNU character and a improved and re-vamped Enterprise track.

A re-implementation in Vulkan is the next big step on the SuperTuxKart road-map. That involves a lot of work, Vulkan support won't be coming to SuperTuxKart until SuperTuxKart 2.0 is released sometime in the distant future. It is, for now, being developed without support for the new Vulkan ray-tracing API since that API isn't really ready to be used by game developers at this time. That could change once the Vulkan ray-tracing API becomes available in Mesa master. Benau, the lead SuperTuxKart developer, described the possibility of adding Vulkan ray-tracing to SuperTuxKart as being "interesting".

SuperTuxKart 1.3 and several other 1.x versions will be released before SuperTuxKart 2.0 sees the light of day. The 1.x branch will remain active and see improvements in the form of new code, new karts and new and re-vamped tracks while the Vulkan version is being developed.

SuperTuxKart for Android, Linux, Windows and macOS can be acquired from The Linux version is also available in most distributions repositories and there is a Flatpak package available at Flathub as net.supertuxkart.SuperTuxKart. The Android version is readily available in the Google Play Store as org.supertuxkart.stk.
