The GNU Project Won't Be Participating In This Years GSOC
The GNU Project has been a Google Summer Of Code (GSOC) participant the last 12 years. Google rejected the GNU projects application to be a mentoring organization this year. None of the GNU software projects, with GCC being a possible exception, will be participating in this years GSOC.

Jose E. Marchesi shared this piece of bad news on the GNU Summer of Code mailing list this week:
"After participating for 12 consecutive years, for the first time ever the GNU Project got rejected as a mentoring organization in the Google Summer of Code 2021.
We did not get any explanation other than: "We had many more applications than available slots. We hope you will apply again in the future!"
Thanks to the maintainers who prepared the ideas pages and did other preparatory work. Hopefully you will be able to use that material out of the program."

The GNU Project maintains a lot of free software used by millions of people every day, so it is a bit sad that Google outright rejected the GNU projects as a mentoring organization. That is different from having individual project ideas rejected; the GNU Project is now left out in the cold with no possibility of having any of their proposed projects considered.
Several software projects under the GNU umbrella proposed projects for this years GSOC. The GNU Guix distribution proposed a few projects related to trusted computing, GNUnet had quite a few related to GNUnet plugins and there were quite a few others. None of those will come to fruition this year.
The GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) has submitted its own application independently. GCC has had projects approved every year the last fourteen years, so there is a chance that at least one GNU project will get to participate in this years GSOC.
