Parler is an American social networking service founded in 2018 as a competitor to Twitter, Gab and the fediverse. The name 'Parler', was inspired by the French word (pronounced par-lay) meaning 'to speak'. The stated goal of the service is to supply a social media infrastructure where content creators are supported for participation, with an aim to empower users to control their social experience and engage in content as they see fit. Like its competitors, Parler is open to everyone without charge for the basic service. As of 2020, it is populated largely by conservative and independent users.

Software, protocols and underlying technology[edit]

Parler uses proprietary closed-source software. The visibility of posts on Parler are limited to that service. No open post sharing protocols like ActivityPub are supported. Parler is therefore not part of the fediverse of open micro-blogging services.

The Parler website does not have any operating system specific requirements. GNU/Linux users can access it using any gecko or chromium based web browser.

Parler is, as of mid-2020, hosted on Amazon S3 servers on the back-end and Amazon Cloudfront on the user-facing side.

With closed-source centralized communication privacy and anonymity are next to impossible by design. For privacy, one should use e.g. Bitmessage.

User-base[edit]

Parler has many notable users who have either turned their back on bigger competing social networks or been banned from them for having the wrong political opinion or other modern-day "thought crime". Notable users include Donald Trump reelection campaign manager Brad Parscale, Senators Mike Lee and Ted Cruz, talk-show host and journalist Candace Owens, Anthony Cumia, Jacob Wohl, Laura Loomer, Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson and Roger Stone.

Company[edit]

The corporation behind the Parler website is based in the United States of America. US laws apply and regulate what speech is and is not allowed on the Parler website.
