HOWTO stop automated spam-bots using .htaccess
Spammers think they can somehow fool search-engines into giving them traffic by link-spamming sites. This, of course, does not work, and the only effect of such spamming is that both the website who is spammed and the spammers sites both get lower rankings in search-engines. Idiots don't realize this and spam anyway, mostly using automated software. Apache's .htaccess is a great way to fight automatic spam-bots.
Why this won't help you all that much[edit]
Realize that .htacess blocking backed on the software's "User-Agent"-string is old news in the armsrace between good and honest webmasters who just want to run a honest website and black-hat spammers. They know many people block this and many take the simple way around it: They just configure their software say "Hi, I'm Mozilla, I'm some guy visiting your website, what's up, here's a shitload of spam for you...".
.htaccess can effectively block any spam-bot which admits to being one. If it says it's a later version of Chrome you can't make a general rule blocking all of Chrome.
Blocking by IP is another method you can use in a .htaccess file which really does not help all that much. The server hosting this page is constantly spammed with POST requests and queries for WordPress and older insecure WordPress plugins in particular. New servers are compromised all the time. Adding every attacking IP to a blacklist would be a full-time job.

There are two ways to stop bots using .htaccess: By rewrite based on condition and allow/deny using SetEnvIfNoCase.
Using Rewrite conditions[edit]

Note: Using RewriteCond and RewriteRules require you to have AllowOverride FileInfo in the Apache web server or vhost configuration (see Apache documentation on allowoverride). You can also use AllowOverride All which allows FileInfo and more you may not need or want such as Indexes.

Blocking User-Agents can be done by making a list User-Agent strings you don't like, line by line, and set the deny rule RewriteRule .* - [F] after them. Note that the conditions are listed with the paramenter [OR], which means just that: If this line OR the next line is true, do.. And the world falls on your head if you put [OR] on the last line of your statement: In the example under RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^Zeus must not have [OR] after it since you're not blocking Zeus OR "RewriteRule .* - [F]", that's the .. rule (Many have asked "What's wrong with my .htaccess rewriterules and that's mostly it)

Note that a space must have a \ in front of it. The ^ says that the word in the User-Agent string that you don't like is in the beginning, but it doesn't have to be, for example, you could say:

First, list the bots (the first line in this example means no user-agent string) and then use Limit to deny them access.

Referer spam[edit]
Some bots just visit your site and tell you they came from the site they want to spam. The idea here is that many webstat tools list referres, and these bots frequently visit (many only with HEAD/ requests) to get on those webstat-generated lists. With rewrite rules you could do:

Note that spam words are generally better than domains, if you're spammed by buy-this-viagra-before-playing-poker.tld then you're better set for the future by banning poker and viagra instead of "buy-this-viagra-before-playing-poker.tld" since also that stops super-poker-fun.tld and so on..
No User-Agent? No posting[edit]
This is a very simple rule which prevents anyone - or anything - which doesn't provide any User-Agent to post. All browsers have one, and even those who hide their real User-Agent using software such as Privoxy provide something.

Using http version 1.0? Get with the times...[edit]
All modern web browsers have been using version 1.1 of the http protocol for over a decade and http 2.0 is trendy.
One rule you should have on all kinds of blogs and forums is this rule which checks if it is a POST request and checks if it is done with http version 1.0 if it is.

There are reasons you may want to prevent anyone who are not coming from your site from posting to your site.

VIA headers[edit]
You may also want rules based on HTTP VIA headers such as:

Many of the one-hop web proxy's are kind enough to add VIA headers which show that the connection is coming by proxy. These proxies may also be very stupid real users who think one-hop web proxies gives them any real security properties (where in fact they don't, use Tor if you want traffic analysis resistance).
(Don't) Cut and Paste RewriteConditions[edit]
You may just want a quick fix and if that's it then you may much likely want to cut and paste this very long list into your .htaccess file. However, do realize that it's very long and thus; there may be things you'd want in this very long example. You definitivly don't need EmailWolf anywhere near your site since it's only used by spammers to harvest e-mail addresses, but there are applications using the "Indy Library" (which is used for a whole lot of things) who may have some public benefit.
