Development of the Super-Mario like 2D jump and run sidescroller platform game The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M. (TSC) is moving forward with the first version 2.1.0 release candidate following three months of rigorous testing since the release of 2.1.0 beta 2 late January 2020. TSC has wonderful graphics, original music, original levels and it is overall a fun free software game worth trying if you have time to waste playing games. TSC is available for Windows and Linux.

The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M developer and project lead Marvin Gülker is "pleased" to announce the availability of The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M. (TSC) 2.1.0 RC1:

"As the project lead of The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M. (TSC), I am pleased to announce that the first Release Candidate (RC1) of the new TSC version 2.1.0 is now available. The release has been tagged on the Git repository as v2.1.0-rc1 and has been uploaded to our web server."

The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M was originally a fork of the free Super-Mario clone Secret Maryo Chronicles. TSC is similar in many ways, but it is also very different. TSC has mostly original graphics, original levels and original music. Some of the same graphical elements are re-used, most are not.

Little has changed since The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M. 2.1.0 beta 2 was released late January 2020. The changes since that release are:

  • Small fixes to the build system
  • Small fixes to the build documentation
  • Added experimental build support for FreeBSD/OpenBSD (GitHub PR #678 by devnexen)
  • Finalised the new title theme (GitHub PR #679 by refi64)
  • Removed battle.ogg music due to the author requesting removal (GitHub PR #679 by refi64)

The final version of TSC 2.1.0 will be released mid-April unless huge unforeseen bugs or issues pop up this or next week.

"This is the first Release Candidate. If no serious problems are discovered until 2020-04-11, version 2.1.0 is going to be released shortly after that date."

The system requirements for running The Secret Chronicles of Dr. M. are trivial. The game does require a OpenGL capable graphics card. It does not have to be high-end or very modern, anything with OpenGL support is fine.

The game is played with the arrow keys and (s to jump and run (a). Joysticks are supported and configurable.

TSC 2.1.0-RC1 binaries for Windows, Ubuntu and Debian are available on the secretchronicles.org website at secretchronicles.org/en/download/. RasPi3 and RasPi3 packages for 2.1.0-RC1 are not available. It is, however, possible to grab TSC 2.1.0-Beta2 packages from ftp.secretchronicles.org/releases/. It is also possible to fetch the source from the github releases page. Compiling the game is fairly easy; you will need to install a handful of dependencies your distribution likely has packages for to install and use the standard cmake build process.
