DNS Root Servers are now Updated every 5 minutes

SOA records for .com and .net zones are now updated every five minutes. This means your domain name will be usable and available to your customers almost instantly after you purchase it, and also means you now theoretically can run domain-servers using dynamic IP addresses.

VeriSign Naming and Directory Services (VNDS) are now updating the SOA records for the .com and .net domain zones every 5 minutes instead of twice a day. Internet domain registrars can now offer instant availability of the domain names they sell.

This also makes it possible to run DNS servers on dynamic IP's, but this is generally a extremely bad idea, leave DNS hosting to professionals or a stable Free DNS service.

Many other domain name zones already update frequently enough to make new domain names seem instantly available, .org has been frequently updated for years.
